PETALING JAYA (July 26): A 21-year-old student saw the car driven by him ruined when it was carried away by waters during a flash flood here along Jalan PJU 1A/1 at about 3.20pm on Saturday.
According to a report by The Star, Lean Ming Yi was driving back from his auntie’s home in Ara Damansara in the afternoon when a sudden downpour resulted in the luxury car being quickly submerged in a flash flood. He was then trapped in the vehicle as he could not open the door.
“The water rose very fast and the car engine suddenly stopped. It’s an automatic, so it is very sensitive.
“He saw three other cars submerged as well. He tried to get out, but the water continued to rise and he couldn’t open the door.
“At the same time, the car seat was pushing him closer and closer to the steering wheel, making it even harder for him to escape, ” Lean’s auntie Shirley Ng, 56, told the daily.
The luxury vehicle damaged in the flood belongs to Ng.
Lean called 999 for help while in the car but help came sooner when two men passing by helped him escape by opening the car door from outside. The car then floated away.
Ng said that her car is “a total loss. I have checked with my insurance company and was told that my car is not covered for floods, even though it is a first party insurance.
“I had a tow truck send my car to a workshop at my own cost, but the leather seats, the engine, everything was gone,” The Star reported her saying.
She also wanted action to be taken by the local authorities to fix the flooding problem in the area caused by rapid development.
“We are paying taxes and yet we have been facing this issue for years. I want to address the flood issue and question why the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has not taken any action for all these years?”
